SPOT THE BEE FLY ETC. ETC. UPDATE 12TH SEPTEMBER 2022

Here we are again with some new photographs and comments which are all very much appreciated. First up is Roger Hoyle with a fabulous selection of photographs, thank you Roger!

4th September from Roger Hoyle:

“Hi Mike and Jenny, here are a few pictures for the Bee Fly, all taken during our recent break in Devon.

1. The bee caught my attention as it was completely covered in pollen!

2. The Common Blue was at RHS Rosemoor.

3. This large fly/bee caught my eye.  Searching on the internet it seems to be a large hoverfly.  I didn't know there were so many different sizes and shapes of hoverfly.

4. The slick robin was at RHS Rosemoor.

5. This pristine Speckled Wood was seen on a woodland walk

6. The final is a spider on a wall - it was the shadow that caught my eye.

Best wishes, Roger.”

5th September from Irene: “Dear Mike and Jenny. I am attaching a photo of a moth I found on the window of the bedroom. The edges of the wings are chocolate brown the rest of the wings are translucent. I am hoping someone will be able to identify it for me. Regards, Irene”

I told Irene it is of course a Box Moth!

Then a couple from me, a Scarce Swallowtail butterfly taken in the ruins of an old castle in Portugal, and what I believe is a minute Froghopper taken on an Ivy leaf in the garden:

From Graeme Parker this morning. Graeme has also sent a short close-up video of a Box Moth which he will try and upload to the website:

Finally, a note from me on behalf of the Heritage Gallery which I am sending out to our various Groups:

Dear All, as a result of Covid, like everything else we had to suspend our regular weekly free Lunchtime Talks at the Heritage Gallery which were attracting up to a 30 plus audience. We are back in the groove again now and so are trying to re-build our audience, Phil Stevens is putting together a programme of talks which we will publish asap, in the meantime, perhaps you might like to come along on Thursday when I have been thrown into the deep end with a PowerPoint presentation of our long ago holiday in Madagascar.

Thank you!

Best wishes, Mike
